Values Focus of the Week: Unity and Fellowship

𝑩𝒆𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒅, 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚!” – 𝑷𝒔𝒂𝒍𝒎 133:1

Unity isn’t just about being in the same space—it’s about standing together with purpose, grace, and love. When we choose fellowship over division, we create a community where hearts are strengthened, burdens are shared, and growth becomes collective. Be intentional in listening and understanding.

Choose humility over conflict.

Support and serve selflessly.

Pray for and with others—true unity is built on a foundation greater than ourselves.

According to Alexander the Great, “… upon the conduct of each depends on the fate of all.’’ This motto has propelled his army to subdue more than half of the world in the most significant military act ever made in the history of humankind. Bound by one purpose and not fearing pain or death, his soldiers conquered nation after nation, kingdom after kingdom, casting fear upon both the mighty and the strong.

Such a fantastic account of what unity and solidarity can do has become the model after which militaries in the world have patterned themselves. Knowing that unity will keep everything intact and in order, it has become the norm of conduct even for civic organizations. Anywhere where discipline and order are observed, we will sense a strong sense of unity embedded in the hearts of those that run the system.

Unity is a principle applicable to any undertaking, regardless of its application and purposes. For example, there are labor unions that take extreme measures such as setting vehicles or buildings on fire or barring fellow laborers who do not join them from coming to work. There are also syndicates whose members are united in inflicting harm and fear upon their victims and cults whose followers are united in doing anti-social acts like vandalism and destruction of public properties. Such harmful application of unity was the same reason God decided to divide the language of men when they built the Tower of Babel and exalt themselves against the God of the Heavens.

Even though unity is amoral, it can serve both good and evil purposes. In our quest to transform the nation of the Philippines, it is important to discern which side we are taking on issues that matter to everyone. We can choose to be united with people who desire to exact justice and righteousness or with those who have vested interests and agendas contrary to public safety, security, and prosperity. As a united people of this nation, let us strive to use unity towards a positive end. Unite and fellowship with those who have the same heart, mind, and purpose to alleviate the condition of the nation, to revive the hearts of the people towards national pride, and to take good care of and multiply our national resources and treasures. Let us unite in bringing this nation to its glorious future, which will benefit the many and the generations to come.

1.Assess your conduct towards your family, colleagues, leaders, and countrymen. Do you have the same vision, mission, and goals? Determine specific steps on how you can strengthen and be one with them in these aspects.

2.Do

you belong to groups, associations, or organizations? Are the purposes of its creation contributory to the improvement and development of its members, community, or the nation? If yes, how can you strengthen this?

3.Reflect on your fellowship with other people. Is the substance of your conversation edifying and encouraging towards building a better family, community, workplace, or country? If not, identify the points of improvement and resolve to implement them.

We are channels of unity who bring people closer together. We bear with and forgive one another. We shall strive to be sympathetic, considerate, compassionate, and humble towards our family members, our coworkers, and our leaders. We will make every effort to keep the unity in every sphere through the bond of peace. We shall live in harmony with one another. All for one, one for all!

Almighty God, as you unite the whole of creation unto you, teach us to unite as a nation and fellowship for your purposes. Help us care, build, and love one another. Allow us to unite through fellowship so that in all, we move as one towards progress and prosperity. Intertwine our hearts with You so that we will feel Your heart for our nation and carefully establish them as You desire. Put a bar against division and factionalism, and embed in us one heart, one mind, one purpose, and one spirit to love You and our nation. These we ask in the name of our Lord, Amen.
