The Journey of Southern Philippines Agri-business and marine and Aquatic School of Technology
Founding & Early Years (1996)
The beginning of Southern Philippines Agri-business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) is rooted in the aspirations and perseverance of two remarkable individuals, then – Bario Lieutenant Juanita Ybarle Vda. de Salmon and former Assemblyman Benjamin V. Bautista Sr. Their shared vision for providing educational opportunities to the underprivileged laid the foundation for what would become a pioneering institution in the province of Davao del Sur.
Year 1982
However, the dreamers hope to expand the offering secondary education. In 1982, Malita Municipal High School evolved into a state college, thanks to the efforts of Assemblyman Benjamin V. Bautista Sr. who authored the bill that became Batas Pambansa Blg. 148. Thus, Malita Agri-business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (MAMAST) was born, with Engr. Ramon M. Barbon as its first president.
MAMAST (1982 - 1984)
The Transformation was remarkable, unlike most state colleges which evolve from established tertiary schools, MAMAST originated from humble beginnings as a secondary school. This unique journey marked a legacy that resonate deeply within the hearts of its founders and the community it served.
Succeeding Presidents
Under the leader of successive presidents, SPAMAST experienced significant growth and development. Dr. Francisco G. Ladaga Sr., and Dr. Alexander M. Campaner spearheaded initiatives to enhane the institutions academic offering and infrastructure. Dr. Irvin C. Generalao’s tenure marked a period of dramatic changes and resource mobilization, resulting in partnerships and advancements in academic, research, and extension services.
In 2019, Dr. Ruth S. Lucero became the SPAMAST’s first female president ushering in an era of faculty and staff development aligned with 21st-century skills and education trends. The resilience of SPAMAST in addressing various calamities, such as earthquakes, fires, and the pandemic has been tested. Through her leadership and adaptation, SPAMAST continues to thrive and uphold its mission of providing quality education despite the challenges.
Year 2023
The year 2023 marked a significant milestone with the installation of Dr. Lynette A. Bontia as SPAMAST’s 6th president. Under her leadership, SPAMAST continued to excel in licensure examinations and facility enhancement, cementing its reputation as a hub for quality education and research.
SPAMAST Onwards
Throughout its 43-year academic journey, SPAMAST remained steadfast in its pursuit of academic excellence, inclusivity, and limitless opportunities for its students and the community. As it progresses towards universityhood, SPAMAST stands poised to contribute significantly to the sustainable development objectives of the Philippines, embodying the spirit of innovation, perserverance, and dedication that has characterized its remarkable journey.
