The Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) strengthened its commitment to research excellence and extension collaboration as it joined Siquijor State College (SSC), partner institutions, and co-hosts in the 1st International Research and Extension Conference on Innovation, Sustainability, and Local Advancement (IRECISLA 2026) held on October 27–29, 2026, at Siquijor State College, Siquijor, Philippines.
Anchored on the theme, “Strengthening the ISLA Pillars: Advancing Innovation, Sustainability, Lifelong Learning, and Authenticity through Research and Extension,” the international academic gathering provided a platform for researchers, educators, and professionals to present research findings, exchange innovative ideas, and share best practices that address contemporary challenges and promote sustainable development.
As one of the valued co-host institutions, SPAMAST received a Plaque of Appreciation in recognition of its valuable partnership and support as a co-host of the international conference. The recognition underscores the institution’s continuing commitment to fostering academic collaboration, advancing research initiatives, and strengthening extension services.
Moreover, the participation of SPAMAST faculty and staff as technical members highlighted the institution’s active contribution to the successful conduct of the conference and its dedication to promoting knowledge sharing and meaningful institutional partnerships.
Adding distinction to the institution’s participation, Mr. Kher Dave H. Doños brought home two major recognitions, earning both the Best Paper Award and Best Presenter Award for his research entitled “Science and Technology Interventions for Enhancing Smallholder Tilapia Farm Productivity in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas of Davao Occidental, Southern Philippines.”
His award-winning research highlights the potential of science and technology interventions in improving aquaculture productivity and addressing the challenges faced by smallholder tilapia farmers in geographically isolated and disadvantaged communities. This achievement reflects the value of research in developing practical, evidence-based solutions that respond to local needs and contribute to sustainable livelihoods.
SPAMAST extends its congratulations to Mr. Doños and its appreciation to the organizers, partner institutions, and conference collaborators for making IRECISLA 2026 a meaningful avenue for international academic engagement.
Through its active participation and accomplishments, SPAMAST continues to demonstrate that research and extension are vital instruments for transforming knowledge into meaningful community impact, advancing innovation, and promoting sustainable local development.
This initiative also reinforces the institution’s contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) through research-driven learning, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through science and technology innovations, SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strengthened institutional collaboration, and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through research initiatives supporting sustainable aquacultur.
