Marking a significant milestone in the lives of its graduates, the Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) held its commencement exercises at the Malita ABC Gxaym in Malita, Davao Occidental, on July 9, 2026, celebrating academic excellence, perseverance, and the transformative power of education. The event brought together graduates, faculty members, families, alumni, and guests in a memorable tribute to the Class of 2026.
Serving as Guest Speaker, Dr. Maricar S. Casquejo, Regional Director of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Office XI, described SPAMAST as more than an institution of higher learning—it is a beacon of hope and a testament to the transformative power of quality education. She reminded the graduates that they are living proof of the vision, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment of the institution’s founders, educators, and supporters.
Highlighting the importance of resilience and adaptability in an ever-changing world, Dr. Casquejo encouraged the graduates to embrace every challenge with courage and optimism, quoting, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” She further inspired the Class of 2026 to remain lifelong learners, emphasizing that, “The moment you stop learning is the moment you stop growing.”
She also reminded the graduates that their achievements extend beyond personal success, noting that every diploma earned represents the trust and investment of the Filipino people through accessible public education. She urged them to become responsible professionals who will bring pride not only to themselves but also to their families, communities, and alma mater.
Adding to the words of inspiration, CHED Commissioner Dr. Ethel Agnes P. Valenzuela Agrupis shared her personal journey of perseverance, underscoring that success is built through determination, hard work, and faith. She encouraged the graduates to embrace challenges without fear, reminding them that, “Do not be afraid to fail, because failure is not the opposite of success—it is part of success.” She likewise emphasized the value of meaningful relationships and professional networks, encouraging the graduates to nurture connections that will guide and support them throughout their careers.
Meanwhile, SPAMAST Board of Trustees Chairperson Dr. Maria Teresa T. Aquino emphasized the importance of having a clear vision and purpose in life. She challenged the graduates to become proactive individuals who create opportunities rather than wait for them, reminding them that they possess the ability to shape their own future and become catalysts of positive change in society.
Representing the graduating class, Ms. Rhechel Ann M. Ipan, Batch 2026 Magna Cum Laude, delivered an inspiring message reflecting on her journey as a student leader and academic achiever. She spoke about the values of perseverance, discipline, and dedication that enabled her to overcome challenges and achieve success.
Encouraging her fellow graduates to pursue their aspirations with confidence, she reminded them to believe in their abilities and use their knowledge and talents in service of their communities. She also delivered one of the ceremony’s most memorable messages:
“Disappoint those who told you that you would never graduate. Disappoint those who underestimated your abilities. Disappoint your fears. Disappoint your doubts. Disappoint the version of yourself that once believed you were not enough.”
She concluded her address with the heartfelt reminder, “Layo pa, pero layo na,” encouraging the graduates to celebrate how far they have come while remaining inspired by the journey that still lies ahead.
The Commencement Exercises served not only as a celebration of academic excellence but also as a reaffirmation of SPAMAST’s commitment to producing competent, compassionate, and socially responsible graduates who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to nation-building. As the Class of 2026 embarks on a new chapter, they carry with them the knowledge, values, and resilience cultivated throughout their academic journey—ready to make a lasting impact in their professions and communities.
This milestone advances Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by recognizing the transformative role of inclusive and quality higher education in preparing graduates for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship. It also supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth by equipping future professionals with the resilience, competence, and leadership needed to thrive in the workforce and contribute to sustainable economic and community development.
