MALITA, DAVAO OCCIDENTAL — The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Davao Occidental facilitated “Kapehan during the 2026 Regional Science and Technology Week – Davao Occidental” on September 1, 2026, at the Southern Philippines Agri-Business, Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) in Malita, Davao Occidental.
Carrying the theme, “Security, Technology, and Digital Innovation: Driving Food Security, Sustainable Energy, and National Resilience,” the activity provided a platform for government leaders, science and technology stakeholders, and local partners to discuss the role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in addressing development challenges and creating opportunities for the province.
The event was attended by DOST Provincial Director Ms. Maria Victoria Dado; SPAMAST Vice President for Research, Innovation, Development and Extension (VRIDE) Dr. Edelyn S. Albiso, representing SPAMAST President Dr. Lynette A. Bontia; Jose Abad Santos Municipal Mayor Atty. Jason John A. Joyce; Assistant Regional Director of the Technical-Support Services Division Ms. Sheryl N. Napoco, PFT; and Mrs. Marianella Dela Cerna Malinao, representative of Mrs. Marivic F. Hubac.
The discussions centered on the opportunities available to Davao Occidental through technology transfer, innovation, and the development of local potentials. Participants exchanged insights on how science and technology can be harnessed to improve productivity, strengthen local industries, promote sustainable practices, and support communities in addressing emerging challenges.
The gathering also emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration among government agencies, academic institutions, local government units, and other stakeholders to ensure that research-based knowledge and technological innovations are translated into practical solutions that benefit communities.
For SPAMAST, the activity further reinforces its commitment to advancing research, innovation, development, and extension initiatives responsive to the needs and potentials of Davao Occidental. As the province’s higher education institution specializing in agriculture, fisheries, marine and aquatic sciences, and related fields, SPAMAST continues to promote knowledge generation and technology-based solutions that contribute to sustainable and resilient communities.
