In line with its Sports and Wellness for Employees in Action initiative, the Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) conducted a Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness session via Zoom on May 28, 2025. The event was spearheaded by the Gender and Development (GAD) Office, headed by GAD Director Prof. Imelda T. Lauron, and actively participated in by SPAMAST employees.
The session commenced with an opening message from SPAMAST President Dr. Lynette A. Bontia, who shared a heartfelt reflection on how cancer has personally affected her, citing experiences with close relatives diagnosed with the disease. Dr. Bontia emphasized that awareness and education about cancer are crucial not only for women but for everyone, highlighting the value of preventive health measures and early detection.
Serving as the resource speaker was Dr. Kathleen Kaye A. Luceñara, Medical Officer IV and Chief Resident at the Southern Philippines Medical Center. Dr. Luceñara delivered an in-depth presentation on the prevention, early detection, and necessary precautions for breast and cervical cancer. She also responded comprehensively to questions raised by participants, particularly those related to breast and ovarian cancer cases.
To conclude the session, Dr. Edelyn S. Albiso, Vice-President for Administration and Finance, delivered the closing remarks. She expressed her appreciation to Dr. Luceñara and the GAD Office for organizing the meaningful activity. Dr. Albiso underscored the importance of being informed about early detection and health management. She encouraged the SPAMAST community to support one another, prioritize well-being, and become advocates for improved healthcare within the institution and beyond.
The awareness session marked another step in SPAMAST’s commitment to promoting holistic wellness among its employees through education and proactive health initiatives.
