SPAMAST Celebrates Teacher’s Day: Valuing Teacher’s Voices

On October 7, 2024, the Institute of Human Service hosted a special Teacher’s Day convocation at the SPAMAST Auditorium in Malita, Davao Occidental. Themed “Valuing Teachers’ Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” the event brought together educators, students, and community members to honor the vital contributions of teachers.

The event began with a moving Praise and Worship session led by Pastor Roy L. Ilaya and worshippers from Victory Chapel, setting a reflective and grateful tone for the celebration.

The second part of the program featured the convocation proper, with Mr. Ervil Charles Millan, School Principal II of Mariano Peralta National High School, as the resource speaker. Mr. Millan passionately emphasized that teachers are the backbone of education, consistently adapting to the ever-evolving challenges and demands of the field. He highlighted the passion and dedication teachers bring, not only in imparting knowledge but also in fostering shared governance among students, teachers, and the wider community. He stressed that teachers’ voices are critical in shaping the future of education.

Mr. Millan also introduced the “Lihok Program,” an initiative aimed at promoting teacher wellness through sports and other stress-relief activities. The program fosters a sense of community among educators, offering a much-needed outlet for relaxation and camaraderie.

Focusing on the theme of the event, Millan discussed the concept of a new social contract for education—one that places greater value on teachers, both in terms of compensation and working conditions.

In addition to Mr. Millan’s address, messages of appreciation were also shared by the College President, Dr. Lynette A. Bontia, and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Marlyn B. Llameg, both of whom emphasized the invaluable role teachers play in shaping future generations.

A heartwarming tribute to teachers was one of the event’s highlights. Students presented video greetings and gave flowers while performing a song number as a token of gratitude to their mentors, making the celebration even more meaningful.

The event concluded with a joyful community dance, symbolizing unity and shared appreciation for educators. It was a fitting end to a day dedicated to celebrating and valuing the voices of teachers who continue to inspire and uplift their communities.
