SPAMAST Celebrates Ocean Month with Focus on Climate Solutions, Student Resilience, and Faith-Based Values

In celebration of Ocean Month 2025, the Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) held its May Convocation Program on May 5, 2025, centering on the theme, “Unlock Ocean-Based Solutions to Climate Change” (Karagatan ang Solusyon). Facilitated by the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, the event brought together messages of faith, environmental stewardship, and resilience that resonated deeply with students and faculty alike.

The first part of the convocation featured a heartfelt Worship and Word Service led by Rev. Dr. Prudencio Coloma of Elim’s Fellowship, TOBOGMI. Dr. Coloma shared a powerful message on perseverance and faith, encouraging students to remain steadfast in their academic journey despite challenges. “Your capabilities alone are not enough,” he emphasized, urging the youth to rely on God’s providence and favor. He further reminded the audience that obedience to God, to parents, and to teachers is key to unlocking blessings and achieving success.

The program then shifted to the highlight of Ocean Month, featuring two special guests who provided both a technical and personal lens on the importance of ocean-based solutions. Mr. Redento Magno, Technical Service Division Chief of DENR, spoke about the critical role that government agencies and communities play in combating climate change through ocean preservation. He emphasized collective responsibility in protecting marine ecosystems for future generations.

Adding a deeply human perspective, Mr. Rionaldo Ariate, a small-scale fisherfolk from Malita, shared his lived experiences navigating the challenges of fishing life. His inspiring story of dedication and sacrifice moved many, as he recounted how his unwavering hard work enabled him to support his family and send his children to school.

In a fitting conclusion, the convocation also recognized student excellence as medals and certificates were awarded to outstanding SPAMAST athletes who excelled during the SCUAA 2025 National Competition in Camiguin. The celebration of their athletic triumphs stood as a testament to the spirit of dedication and excellence that defined the day’s themes.

The convocation uplifted the students with messages of hope and obedience and called them to action to protect the ocean, value their education, and honor the efforts of those who support them.
