Forging Academic Partnerships: SPAMAST and Siliman University Sign MOU and Launch Lecture Series

October 24, 2024, Malita, Davao Occidental – In a significant move to strengthen academic collaborations, the Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) and Silliman University held a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Signing Ceremony and Lecture Series at the SPAMAST Auditorium in Malita, Davao Occidental. This partnership aims to foster knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and innovative educational programs that benefit students, faculty, and local communities.

The ceremony was attended by faculty and students from SPAMAST’s Institute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (IFMS) alongside distinguished representatives from Silliman University. The event opened with a welcoming address from Prof. John Paul Pacyao, Dean of IFMS, who highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership in enhancing academic experiences and future career paths for SPAMAST students.

Prof. Michelle Elemino introduced the event’s esteemed guests and partners, sharing a brief overview of the MOU’s scope, goals, and objectives. Following the introductions, the official MOU signing ceremony took place, formalizing the collaboration between the two institutions.

Adding an academic depth to the event, Prof. Pablina L. Cadiz, a leading faculty member at Silliman, delivered an insightful lecture on “Understanding the Mangrove Ecosystem.” Her presentation delved into the vital role of mangrove ecosystems in biodiversity conservation, coastal protection, and carbon sequestration.

The lecture series continued with presentations from researchers at Silliman University, who shared their expertise and recent studies related to marine ecosystems, sustainable fisheries, and coastal resource management. Their research addressed critical environmental issues, including the impact of climate change on coral reefs, sustainable aquaculture practices, and community-based marine conservation efforts. The discussions provided valuable insights for SPAMAST students and faculty, reinforcing the relevance of interdisciplinary research and cooperation in tackling environmental challenges.

Dr. Janet S. Estacion from Silliman University expressed her institution’s commitment to this collaboration, emphasizing the shared vision of both universities in marine science, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. She noted that the partnership’s scope extends beyond academic cooperation to real-world impact, benefiting communities and fostering environmental stewardship.

Representing SPAMAST, Dr. Marlyn B. Llameg, Vice President for Academic Affairs, reiterated SPAMAST’s dedication to advancing research initiatives with Silliman University. She emphasized that the MOU will catalyze growth in marine sciences and create opportunities for students to engage in meaningful research and learning experiences.

The event concluded with closing remarks from Prof. Jhun Rheil H. Molina, who extended his gratitude to all attendees, organizers, and partners. He acknowledged the collaborative spirit that brought about this partnership, envisioning a promising future for both institutions in addressing pressing environmental and academic challenges.
