Women Leaders of SPAMAST Inspire Community During National Women’s Month Convocation

Strength, wisdom, and servant leadership took center stage as the Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) celebrated National Women’s Month through a meaningful Convocation Program held at the Founder’s Hall on March 2,2026, SPAMAST Malita, Davao Occidental. Anchored on the theme “Lead Like the Babaylans, Filipinas!”, the gathering became a powerful platform for the institution’s women leaders to share their journeys, values, and visions for the future.

Hosted by the Institute of Human Service (IHS) in partnership with the Gender and Development (GAD) Office, the celebration gathered faculty members, employees, and students in a meaningful assembly that highlighted women’s leadership, courage, and transformative roles in society. The program opened with a Worship Service led by Ptr. Roy S. Ilaya, Sr. of Victory Chapel Christian Center, setting a reflective and empowering tone for the day.

At the heart of the celebration was an inspiring talk show that highlighted the lived experiences and leadership philosophies of SPAMAST’s top women administrators: College President Dr. Lynette A. Bontia, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Marlyn B. Llameg, Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Janet R. Octura, and Vice President for Research and Extension Dr. Edelyn S. Albiso.

With sincerity and conviction, the leaders reflected on their personal and professional journeys—stories marked by perseverance, faith, discipline, compassion and an unwavering commitment to public service.

President Bontia underscored that leadership is not defined by position but by purpose. She encouraged women to embrace their unique strengths and lead with integrity, reminding the community that true empowerment begins with self-belief and courage. Drawing parallels to the Babaylans of pre-colonial Philippines, she emphasized that women have always been pillars of wisdom and transformation in society.

Dr. Llameg spoke passionately about academic leadership, sharing how empathy and excellence must go hand in hand in shaping institutions of higher learning. She encouraged faculty and students alike to pursue growth relentlessly while remaining grounded in compassion and service.

From the lens of administration and stewardship, Dr. Octura highlighted the importance of resilience and sound decision-making. She shared that women in order to lead must invest on herself, improve her physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Meanwhile, Dr. Albiso reflected on the role of women in advancing its professional role. Her words reinforced the vital role of women in bridging knowledge, community development, and nation-building.

The open and heartfelt exchange during the talk show allowed the audience to witness not only the professional accomplishments of these leaders but also their humanity—their sacrifices, and steadfast hope. Their collective message was clear, women leads with all her heart, knowledge, and strengths.

As the program concluded, participants left the hall inspired and reminded that the spirit of the Babaylan lives on in modern Filipina leaders—strong, compassionate, visionary, and transformative.

Through this celebration, SPAMAST reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture where women are empowered to lead boldly and shape the future with wisdom and grace. This also reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality and United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, strengthening its role in building inclusive leadership and empowering women in higher education and beyond.
