Value Focus of the Week: WORD OF HONOR

The Word of the Almighty God is sure and proven to be true. When He speaks, it will not return to Him void but will surely accomplish what He desired. He executes His will according to what He has spoken and decreed. He backs up His Word with His action; that is why His works are all done in truth. He is the Author and the testimony of “word of honor.”

God is the beginning because He is the Alpha. He is consistent, for He remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. In Him is the Word, for He and His Word are one. His Word is spirit, and it gives Life. This truth is our guiding principle to live the Word and keep our Word as well. Therefore, keeping our Word holds particular significance in past times and even now. We value personal integrity and honor.

Remember the times past when everyone knew each other’s family in a community and even in a city or municipality? We would never act in a way that could compromise our family’s good name and reputation. It was a time when integrity and “palabra de honor,” or Word of honor, were instilled in children at a very early age and were the consideration for realizing success. Although word of honor is verbal, it is considered a commitment and binds the parties involved in an agreement.

Every time we pledge our commitment, we risk our reputation and honor. It implies that others can trust us. It is a strong message that we are credible and value our relationship with whoever we give our Word to. It promotes favorable assumptions that our intentions are honorable. We do not espouse double-mindedness, double standards, or shifting of our moral compass; thus, our reputation is established. If we look internally, our conscience is clear because we know we have not aggrieved anyone. Our honor is intact, resulting in peace of mind and heart.

“My word is my bond” still applies to the present time. Many changes may happen since our world and environment are continuously evolving. Words and opinions may change, but the importance of integrity and a word of honor has not. Keep your Word and advocate for what’s right; otherwise, everything will overwhelm you. God cares about the quality, quantity, and honorability of our words. How much we value a word of honor matters. As the Lord Jesus Christ has said, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Any statement that goes beyond these simple affirmations is influenced by evil.

  1. Start to assess how many of your past promises were kept. These commitments might be at home or even in the workplace. If you have not yet fulfilled your commitments, ask God to provide you the ability and power to do so. If you made unrealistic promises, be honest with the person or office you promised and talk to them about a solution.
  2. As parents or superiors, we must be mindful of our words because our children and those around us observe whether we practice what we preach. More importantly, God accounts us with every vow, promise, and pledge that we give.
