Puerto Princesa City, Palawan – The Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) proudly participated in the 12th Annual International Conference on Environmental Science (ACES) held from November 6 to 8, 2024, at Palawan State University. This year’s conference, themed “Environmental Diplomacy and Negotiations through Open Science: Learning from Community Actions’ Successes and Opportunities,” was organized by the Philippine Environmental Science Association, Inc. (PESA, Inc.) in partnership with Palawan State University (PSU) and the University of the Philippines Los Baños – School of Environmental Science and Management (UPLB-SESAM).
Representing SPAMAST were Prof. Fernan M. Arellano, a faculty member of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science program, alongside four exemplary students: Lou Jane Cañete, Angel Nassreen Calago, Aimel Caalim, and John Carlo Gapusan. Their participation highlighted SPAMAST’s commitment to fostering global exposure and promoting active student involvement in tackling pressing environmental issues.
The ACES conference provided a platform for students, scientists, and practitioners to engage in discussions on strengthening science diplomacy, open science, and community-based solutions to environmental challenges. It featured multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research presentations on topics ranging from climate change and biodiversity conservation to disaster risk management and sustainable development.
SPAMAST’s involvement was made possible through the steadfast support of its administration, which is led by President Dr. Lynette A. Bontia and guided by Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Marlyn B. Llameg. The administration remains dedicated to empowering students and faculty members by enabling participation in high-caliber academic events, fostering knowledge exchange, and contributing to national and international environmental initiatives.
