The Extension Services Office of Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) successfully conducted an activity entitled “Participatory Rural Appraisal in the Municipalities of Davao Occidental” on April 2 and 4, 2025. This initiative aimed to gather valuable insights from local communities to support more responsive and sustainable rural development programs. The activity was designed to actively engage stakeholders including farmers and fisherfolk in identifying community resources, challenges, and opportunities, highlighting SPAMAST’s commitment to participatory and inclusive approaches in extension work.
On April 2, 2025, the first day of the activity was held at the Municipal Agriculture Office in Malita, in partnership with the local government and under the guidance of Municipal Agriculturist Dr. Bryan Paano. Community members and local officials took part in various participatory tools and discussions that provided a clearer picture of Malita’s agricultural landscape and development needs. The second session was held on April 4, 2025, at the Municipal Agriculture Office in Sta. Maria, with the support of Municipal Agriculturist Mr. Wendell G. Albasin. Similar activities were conducted, empowering stakeholders in Sta. Maria to share their perspectives and collaborate in planning for local development.
The two-day PRA activity was a significant step forward in strengthening SPAMAST’s partnership with the municipalities of Davao Occidental. It also emphasized the importance of grassroots participation in shaping programs that directly impact their lives and livelihoods. The results of the Participatory Rural Appraisal will serve as a valuable input in the crafting of the SPAMAST Extension Agenda 2025–2029, ensuring that future programs are grounded in real community needs and aspirations. The Extension Services Office extends its gratitude to the municipal officials, agricultural staff, and all participants for their active involvement and warm welcome. Looking ahead, SPAMAST will continue its PRA initiatives with upcoming activities scheduled on April 10, 2025, in Don Marcelino, and a three-day PRA session on April 23–25, 2025, in Balut Island. These future engagements aim to further promote inclusive planning and community empowerment throughout the province.
