The Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) held its 38th commencement exercises with a Theme: “Sailing Beyond Horizons: 38 Years of Academic Journey”on June 27, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the ABC Gymnasium in Poblacion, Malita, Davao Occidental. This milestone event was graced by Dr. Kenneth D. Baroga, the Assistant Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) XI, representing the Regional Director, Dr. Anthony C. Sales as the Commencement Speaker.
In his inspirational address, Dr. Baroga commended the graduates for their remarkable achievements, not only academically but also for their resilience and dedication in overcoming the challenges posed by the global pandemic. He acknowledged the graduates’ ability to juggle responsibilities with unwavering dedication, marking the beginning of their grand voyage as they prepare to sail beyond horizons.
“To the graduating class, as you stand on the threshold of this new horizon, know that the world awaits your contributions with great anticipation. Be bold, be curious, and above all, be steadfast in your pursuit of excellence,” Dr. Baroga encouraged. He spoke of the vast and endless possibilities that lie ahead, highlighting the unique position of SPAMAST graduates to contribute to sustainable development, particularly in agri-business, marine, and aquatic technology.
Dr. Baroga underscored the crucial role of science and technology in driving innovation and initiatives for the country’s growth and development. He highlighted how DOST has been at the forefront of pioneering innovations, urging the graduates to align themselves with DOST’s vision. He emphasized that their education has equipped them to lead, innovate, and transform, making significant contributions to society.
Dr. Baroga stressed the importance of addressing pressing issues such as food security, environmental conservation, and economic development. He encouraged the graduates to cross disciplinary boundaries, remain flexible, and continue learning within new communities. He envisioned them designing structures yet to be imagined within the realms of agriculture, aquaculture, and marine sciences.
“You are the architects of our future and, simultaneously, the custodians of our history and culture. Lifelong learning is a great gift to yourself. Always make an effort,” he concluded, inspiring the graduates to embark on their journeys with dedication and a commitment to excellence.
The 38th commencement exercises of SPAMAST marked not only the end of an academic chapter but also the start of a new adventure for its graduates, who are now ready to make their mark on the world.
