In observance of World AIDS Day, the Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) hosted a symposium titled “Breaking Barriers: United for an STI/HIV/AIDS-Informed Community” on December 2, 2024, at the SPAMAST Auditorium, Malita, Davao Occidental.
The event, spearheaded by the Institute of Teacher Education and Information Technology under the leadership of Dean Dr. Karen E. Cabalquinto, was conducted in collaboration with the Student Supreme Government led by Mr. Ronel A. San Juan and the Provincial Health Office (PHO), Davao Occidental.
The program commenced with a holy mass, setting a solemn tone for the day’s activities. Aimed at raising awareness and fostering understanding about HIV/AIDS, the symposium brought together students, faculty, and stakeholders for meaningful discussions.
The guest speakers included Ms. Jett Hastle J. Solitana from the PHO and Mr. Philip Tagab, both experts in the field of health education. Their engaging presentations shed light on the realities of HIV/AIDS, debunking myths, discussing preventive measures, and promoting compassion for those affected by the disease.
In a significant step towards promoting health services, free HIV testing was offered after the event. Open to students and stakeholders alike, this initiative aimed to encourage proactive health screening and remove the stigma surrounding HIV testing.
The symposium underscored SPAMAST’s commitment to creating an informed and inclusive community, breaking barriers of ignorance and prejudice, and fostering a supportive environment for all.
